The hallmark of an “it” bag is without a doubt its roster of famous
fans. And if the list of celebrity style makers carrying the
Downtown tote
is any indication, then the ubiquitous handbag by Yves Saint Laurent
is at the peak of its hotness.
The bag debuted this season and was immediately seen on the arms of
endless celeb bagistas.
Jessica Biel and
Kate
Beckinsale keep it chic in white leather, while Maggie
Gyllenhaal and Madonna prefer the black leather with gold
hardware. Salma Hayek (whose future hubby is president of the
company that owns YSL) totes around the black patent one, but
Naomi Watts carries the dark plum. Rocker chicks
Ashlee
Simpson and Dita von Tesse stand out with the black

canvas version, and lucky Demi Moore even scored a
custom-made clear Downtown. Gisele Bundchen (the new face of
YSL) loves her ultra-luxe ostrich Downtown, but perhaps the biggest
fan of the slouchy tote is Kylie Minogue. She has at least
three, including metallic bronze (so does
Jessica Alba),
black leather, and black patent. Actually, it would have been easier
to name who isn’t carrying the bag!
And it’s easy to see why there’s such a loyal following. The
Downtown is fabulously versatile and roomy enough to carry
everything you could possibly need for the day. It comes in medium
and large sizes, as well as an extensive array of colors and fabrics
– even leopard print for that crazy wild child!
