There are many first’s in a young girls life. Her first date. Her first kiss. The first time she went to a dance without a chaperone. And then there’s the first it
handbag. My first handbag memory belongs to German luxury brand
MCM – and let me tell you that this memory might rank higher than other firsts. MCM (founded in 1976 by Michael Cromer Munich and purchased and renamed Mode Creation Munich a few years ago) was the status symbol handbag line in the 1980’s, at least in my Russian circle. I remember being 8-years-old and lusting after the little lion print on
cognac or
black leather. Even a little coin purse would cause my internal bag-a-licious bubbles to boil. I’m thrilled the line is back for sale in the US (since fall 2007) and even more elated with the
spring 2009 offerings that hit stores soon. For spring 2009,
MCM returns to its roots with the reintroductions of the
Cognac Visetos Vintage collection. The sturdy and divinely crafted
caramel coated linen material is covered in MCM’s signature black laurel logo. Suitable for the global nomad, whether she’s jetting off to Milan , taking
the red-eye home from Vegas, or walking through her own urban oasis, there really is a shape for every woman. Traditional shapes like the
Bowler and
Shopper are really strong. The
drawstring also makes a big showing, and it’s actually my silhouette to
watch for 2009 and beyond – it will become major, trust me! I also must give props to all the killer rollers and
weekender bags. Finally, what would a new spring offering be without
some color and risks? For color, expect neon
green, bright
yellow, lilac and soft
pink. As for risks, anyone care for
Swarovski beads over their Cognac Visetos
print
clutch? Prices range from $300 to $1500.
