eco-friendly accessories can’t be stylish. If you answered false, you’re in for a treat.
NOAH embodies earth-friendly fashion perfectly, offering a sweet alternative to leather and animal skins. The San Francisco-based handbag line is equal parts whimsy and functionality, without sacrificing style. The sharp laser-cut details in vivid colors have become their signature statement, while the ASPCA and North Shore League are their signature causes. A percentage of sales is donated to these organizations so you can feel good and look good! Find out how designer (and accessories industry veteran) Joe Donza turned his dream into a reality – literally.
BagTrends: How did the idea for NOAH handbags come about?
Joe Donza: The idea for a handbag company called NOAH actually came from a dream.
Noah, the savior of animals, “two-by-two.” After waking up, I realized that the letters “NO-A-H” are also an acronym for
NO Animal Harmed. The company was founded in San Francisco in 2007 and is committed to the preservation and well-being of animals.
BT: Were there any challenges in launching an eco-conscious accessories collection?
Joe: The challenges are no different from starting any other business. The quality and variety of non-leather materials available today is remarkable.
BT: NOAH uses non-leather resources. What types of materials do you incorporate in the collection?
Joe: Italian PVC, cotton, canvas and straw.
BT: For
spring/summer 2009, the line is largely butterflies, birds, and flowers. What inspirations did you draw from?
Joe: Like our other collections, we feature classic silhouettes with modern day twists, fashionable colors and bold graphics. Spring is a time of rebirth and bold colors. We have tried to capture that in the spring collection.
BT: What is the most popular style? Do you have a favorite?
Joe: The clutch design is the most popular style. This is a favorite of mine because it is multifunctional and a striking design.
BT: What are you working on next for NOAH?
Joe: We will still continue with the cornerstone of laser cut designs, we are looking at a safari-themed designs.
BT: Do you have any tips for readers who want to lead a
“greener” lifestyle?
Joe: It can seem daunting to become fully green, so I think
people should start with small steps.
