“Welcome to the Betsey Johnson School of Charm: Ladylike Behavior Optional.”

So went the theme of Johnson’s latest collection, inspired by visions of teatime etiquette and ladylike attire (concepts not often associated with the wacky designer). And, it came as no surprise, when the runway opened to reveal two models dressed as French maids, dusters included.

But, the collection that followed was fun, flirty, and surprisingly demure; demure for Betsey Johnson, that is. The versatile collection included an outfit for every occasion: a metallic tweed suit; a mohair plaid anorak; even a delicate silk chemise. Surprisingly wearable looks included delicately paired separates in a mixture of textures, like silk georgette blouses with wool skirts; and silk-print shirtdresses with fuzzy cardigans. Dominant colors included navy, ivory, and black, with a few jewel tones here and there; for evening, blush-pink was the color du jour. Of course, a Betsey Johnson show wouldn’t be complete without her signature prom-worthy evening frocks. This season’s looks included frothy confections of lace, chiffon, and ruffled organza, accessorized by funky fur pom-pom veils.

Color Palette: Navy was dominant, as was cream and black; vibrant jewel tones of sapphire, amethyst, and scarlet; blush-pink and purple for evening.

Silhouettes: the Mini length dominated, with bubble-shapes to spare.

Standout Looks: A form-fitting, feminine gray crepe wool sheath; a mohair plaid anorak; plum organza ruffled party dress; and a gorgeous blush pink and lace chiffon gown.

Celebrity Sightings: Fashion gurus Bobbi Thomas and Robert Verdi; actress Amber Tamblyn; singer Aubrey O’Day from MTV group Danity Kane; Cyndi Lauper; Russell Simmons

For the Bagista Who: is wild enough to wear an off-the-wall Betsy Johnson bag
