The scene backstage before the Behnaz Sarafpour fall/winter 2007/2008 show was relatively calm and quiet. No anxious designer yelling at her production manager, no models throwing tantrums, and no major hair and make-up mishaps. The clothes were steamed, lint-rolled, and neatly hung on the racks.

Sarafpour, who is Iranian and bears a strong physical resemblance to Sophia Coppola, introduced herself to all fourteen dressers and explained how each look was to be put together on the models. Hairdressers twisted long hair into medieval braids and buns, while make-up artists smudged sooty eyes and painted pale lips. A manicurist was also on hand to apply press-on nails in pewter. Shoes were padded and double taped before walking down the runway.

Sarafpour said that although her fall collection was inspired by the Middle Ages, she still wanted to make it relevant to modern times. She achieved this balance with a dark color palette and simple, yet elegant, cuts and draping. Voluminous trapeze tops in shimmery charcoal, bubble skirts in gilded taffeta, and slinky dresses in soft gunmetal appeared on the runway. Standout pieces included a sweeping pink strapless gown and a divine satin ruffled skirt. Of course, a Sarafpour collection wouldn’t be complete without her signature coats which editors adore. The luxuriously soft woolen felt coats are sure to keep you tastefully toasty.
